Lymphoedema is localised tissue swelling caused by an abnormal accumulation of protein-rich fluid, that is usually drained through the body's lymphatic system.
In Australia, it’s estimated that lymphoedema occurs in over 20 per cent of all cancer patients treated for gynaecological, breast, prostate cancer, or melanoma.
Lymphoedema can develop at any time during and after cancer treatment and can be a debilitating side effect. It is important that patients are regularly monitored for early symptoms.
The SOZO machine requires patients to simply pop their hands and feet onto plates that determine fluid and tissue status. Readings are then obtained within minutes and visible to both the patient and healthcare professional. This information allows healthcare professionals to identify the early stages of lymphoedema and prescribe appropriate interventions.
The Honda Foundation is proud to have supported the ONJ Centre with this machine, and we look forward to seeing the positive impact it will have on the patients and the community.
